Special Events for Members

The Virginia Historical Society offers a wide variety of lectures and programs, many of which are for members only and feature renowned historians and authors. The following special events are open only to members. Invitations with dates and times are mailed to members before each event.

American Colossus: The Triumph of Capitalism, 1865-1900
A Virginia Historical Society Educational Travel Program

"The War of 1812--The Second War of Independence" includes tours of the Department of State's Diplomatic Reception Rooms, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, and the Maryland Historical Society. VHS Trustee, H. Furlong Baldwin has invited us to be his special guests for an exclusive reception and dinner at the Maryland Club. This overnight event takes place June 21-22. Departure is at 7:30 am on June 21.

This year's Members Appreciation Reception featured the new exhibition, For the Love of Beauty: The Collections of Lora and Claiborne Robins and took place on March 21, 2012 from 5:30-7:30.

J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., Lecture

The J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., Lecture is named in memory of Virginia banker J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., and takes place in the fall. Past Wilkinson Lecturers include David McCullough, Ken Burns, Doris Kearns Goodwin, H. W. Brands, Stephen Ambrose, and Scott Berg. This year's lecturer is Juan Williams who will deliver a talk entitled "Virginia and the Characteristics of American Leadership" on September 20th at 5:30.


Stuart G. Christian, Jr.
Stuart G. Christian, Jr., Lecture

The Stuart G. Christian, Jr., Lecture was named in honor of the former president of the VHS and takes place in the spring. Because "Punky" Christian was a decorated veteran of the Normandy Campaign, we have focused the series on topics from the era of World War II. Previous speakers have included Elizabeth and Michael Norman, Robert Edsel, and Mitchell Zuckoff.

The VHS offers its members monthly bus trips to historic sites and museums and discounts on several spring and fall programs in the "See You In Class" series. Learn more about upcoming trips and view a list of forthcoming See You in Class events.


Garden Party at Virginia House
Annual Garden Party

Held on the last Saturday of Garden Week in April, the annual VHS Garden Party takes place at Virginia House. Members and their guests enjoy the spring flowers, delicious refreshments, and lively conversation in the gardens.


Alexander W. Weddell Lecture
Alexander W. Weddell Trustees Lecture

The first annual Alexander W. Weddell Lecture took place in 1983 and was named in honor of Alexander Weddell, former president of the VHS. Ambassador Weddell and his wife, Virginia, bequeathed Virginia House and a generous endowment to the VHS. The Weddell Lecture takes place on the evening of the last board of trustees meeting of the year, usually the third Wednesday in November. Past Weddell Lecturers have included Gary W. Gallagher, Edward L. Ayers, Rick Atkinson, and Tony Horwitz.

Alexander W. Weddell Lecture
Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture

The inaugural Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture took place on September 21, 2011. Future Chauncey Lecturers will take place in the spring. Named in honor of their parents by Edwin H. Chauncey and Warren F. Chauncey, this series focuses on topics in Virginia, southern, or Civil War history. Chauncey Lecturers have included John Y. Quarstein. This year's lecturer is Jeffry D. Wert who will deliver a talk entitled "Lee at His Zenith, 1862-63" on May 17, 2012.
