Book reviews

COVER: Dolley Payne Todd Madison (1768–1849), the wife of James Madison (1751–1836) and popular First Lady, spent considerable time after her husband's death attempting to secure the sale and publication of his papers. Holly C. Shulman's article chronicles Dolley's private and public efforts to accomplish that task. This early nineteenth-century engraving of Dolley Madison is a copy of a portrait by Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828). (Library of Congress)
