Groundskeeper (part time)

Summary
The Virginia Historical Sociefy, one of the country's leading historical organizations, is looking
for a motivated professional to join our staff. The Groundskeeper is responsible for the care of turf and
plant material at VHS sites. Daily duties include general landscape and lot maintenance including but not
limited to turf and ornamental care (including integrated pest management), ornamental bed and container
maintenance (weeding, removal of leaves and trash, mulching, seasonal planting, pruning), hardscape
maintenance and cleaning (walks and lots, inclement weather emergency response), and obser,rational
record keeping for select activities. The Groundskeeper is responsible for carrying through to completion
initiatives and projects generated at one or more sites by the Site Manager-Virginia House.
Knowledge, skills and abilities necessary
• Good physical endurance for working daily in an outdoor setting
• Position requires early morning, evening and weekend hours as needed
• Abilify to operate and troubleshoot/repair landscape machinery, tools and irrigation
• Demonstrate a good attitude with excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Abilify to prioritize work tasks, working alone and as part of a team
• Abilify to climb up and down stairs and ladders; to bend, stoop and lift in order to move and
retrieve materials; to pull/push, lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Basic computer skills needed
•Associate degree in horticulture/landscaping or equivalent experience
• Virginia Pesticide Applicator's Certificate (commercial not-for-hire) within 60 days of
employment
Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintains finished lot, grounds, and garden settings
• Physically demanding duties include but are not limited to weeding, spraying, pruning, aerating,
fertilizing, mowing, material transport and blowing
• Communicates/coordinates work activities with Site Manager-Virginia House
• Evaluates disease and pest problems, takes and records corrective actions
• Conducts public tours as assigned
• Primary initial response for on-site for weather or other emergency situations relating to Virginia Historical Society properties
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Compensation and Benefits
• Paid Time Off accrued the first year as well as 401(k)
• Compensation relative to position requirements
