Carousel Horse, c.1895

Wooden Carousel Horse
Made by Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia, c.1895
Currently on display in The Story of Virginia exhibition.

This wooden carousel horse was made by the Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia about 1895 and amused countless children in Richmond's Forest Hill Park before the facility closed in the 1930s. This horse was moved to West Virginia before being returned to Richmond and the VHS in 1996. The carousel industry got a tremendous boost at the turn of the century with the advent of electric streetcars that allowed families to travel to amusement parks on the outskirts of American cities.
