Paying for research

VHS researchers can provide a moderate amount of research (maximum of one hour) for a prepaid fee of $25. This includes a limited number of photocopies.

The fee is nonrefundable, and research results are not guaranteed.

Also note that although the VHS has genealogical materials, the principal library for genealogical research in Virginia is the Library of Virginia, which serves as the official archival repository of the commonwealth.

Located at the Library of Virginia are:

  • Deeds
  • Wills
  • Marriage records
  • Military service records

Please complete the online research form to request help with your research.

Inquires are answered in the order received. Please allow four weeks from receipt of payment for a response. Additional genealogical information is available by phone at 804.342.9649.
