Internships and awards

Education internships

Bobby Chandler Internship

Bobby Chandler Interns are responsible for leading tours of the VHS long-term exhibition, The Story of Virginia, and assisting the Educational Services staff with programs for audiences of all ages. Participants will need to be available throughout the school year, particularly in the spring. Applicants must be over eighteen and will be required to undergo a background check. The Bobby Chandler Internship program is generously supported by the Kip Kephart Foundation. Please note:  The application deadline for this internship has passed.

John T. Wilkes Internship

The Virginia Historical Society announces its John T. Wilkes internship for the summer of 2017. The purpose of the internship is to give a student of history a meaningful work experience in a museum setting. The internship will expose the student to various aspects of historical research and interpretation and allow him or her to interact with the society’s varied constituencies. The opportunity brings with it an introduction to best practices in the field of public history and museum education.

The internship is open to college undergraduates, including incoming freshmen. The VHS is looking for a student who enjoys history, has demonstrated a passion for the discipline, and has strong communication skills. The intent of the program is to provide the student with hands-on experience in line with his/her professional interests. Priority will be given to students with a declared major in history or significant coursework in the subject.

The individual chosen as the John T. Wilkes intern will be paid $2,000. The schedule for the internship is flexible but will require a commitment of about 250 hours over the summer. We will be accepting applications through Friday, March 31, 2017. Apply for the John T. Wilkes Internship.
