Virginia Historical Society's Girl Scout Patch Day

At the VHS's Girl Scout Patch Day, Girl Scouts must complete the three following activities to earn their signature VHS patch.
Story of Virginia History Box Station
Activity One: Story of Virginia History Box Stations

The Girl Scouts will circulate through the Story of Virginia, stopping at six stations throughout the exhibition. Each station will feature one of the society's Hands-On History Boxes, with replica artifacts that the scouts will use to learn more about girls' and women's lives during each period of Virginia's history. The Girl Scouts will collect stickers in their "History Box Passport" as they pass by each station. All six stickers must be collected to complete the activity.
Time needed to complete activity: 1 hour

Patch Day Primary Sources
Activity Two: Primary Source Program

During this activity, Girl Scouts will review and analyze letters, diaries, and photographs relating both to the women introduced in activity one and to the history of Girl Scouts in Virginia. Among the materials included in this activity are Girl Scouting scrapbooks from the early 1900s, and photographs of Richmond City Girl Scout troops from the 1920s.
Time needed to complete activity: 40 minutes

Patch Day Game Show
Activity Three: Patch Day Game Show

The culmination of the Patch Day will be a game show in which the girls will form teams and will be challenged to recall the people, places, and events introduced in the first two activities. Girls on the winning team will be rewarded with VHS History Bags, containing bookmarks, pencils, and replica arrowheads.
Time needed to complete activity: 15 minutes
