Join us for this members-only bus trip to Norfolk, where we will visit The MacArthur Memorial and Norfolk Southern Museum.
The MacArthur Memorial is a museum and research center dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of the life of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, as well as paying tribute to the millions of men and women who served with General MacArthur in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. We will enjoy a guided tour of the museum and see the special exhibition, Over Here, Over There: America’s Homefront & Expeditionary Force in World War I. This exhibition explains the causes of the U.S. entry into the war and explores wartime propaganda, the social fabric of America, the training of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.), and the major campaigns fought by the A.E.F. It also discusses the American homefront, including local efforts in the Hampton Roads area.
The Norfolk Southern Museum is located in the company’s downtown Norfolk corporate office. Visitors are able to get an up-close view of a 900-pound railroad coupler and sit in a locomotive simulator. Exhibitions highlight the company’s history and artifacts, including sections of Civil War–era track, vintage hand tools, and diagrams to teach hand signals to railroad trainees. A behind-the-scenes tour of the company’s archives also is included in our tour.
