A Mapp of Virginia Discouered to the Hills
[London] : Sold by I. Stephenson, [ca. 1651].
Call number: Manuscripts Map F221 1651:5
In Virginia Ferrar's 1651 Map of Virginia, America is depicted as a bridge to Asia, which is only some miles distant.
The coastal areas are accurately mapped, but the interior reflects the common misconception that the Pacific Ocean was
only ten days' march from the head of the James River. The Hudson River is connected by a lake with the "Sea of China"
and the Roanoke (Muratuk) River flows from the southwest instead of correctly from the northwest, an error that may have
confused John Lederer during his explorations.
