One word defines Virginia History—Leadership

We invite you to follow in the footsteps of the leaders who helped create the Virginia Historical Society.  Today, these generous donors have taken up the challenge laid down by successive generations of leaders to champion our vital mission to connect people to America's past through the unparalleled story of Virginia.

Founders – $15,000 and above
Established in 1831, the founders of the Virginia Historical Society envisioned an institution that would collect and preserve Virginia's history to benefit future generations. 

John Marshall Council - $10,000
Named in honor of Chief Justice John Marshall, the society’s first president.

James Madison Council - $5,000
The James Madison Council honors President James Madison, who was elected an honorary member at the society’s first meeting. 

Battle Abbey Council (Senior Fellow - $2,500, Fellow - $1,000, and Associate - $500)
The Battle Abbey Council is named after the 1912 neoclassical building that serves as the historic core of the Virginia Historical Society.
