The Birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant, Point Pleasant, Ohio
Lithograph
By age twenty-seven, Jesse Grant, the father of Ulysses, had relocated six times. In 1821, he married Hannah Simpson and built the simple house at Point Pleasant that would become famous as the humble birthplace of a president. As this lithograph suggests, in addition to his tanning business, Jesse owned and tilled considerable land. Ulysses recalled, "I was fond of agriculture, and of all employment in which horses were used."
