George Catlin, View of West Point (Cadets Drilling on the Plain), 1827

Oil on canvas, 15 x 25 in.

Both Lee and Grant were West Point graduates. Lee excelled there, earning the highest rank of leadership, corps adjutant, without receiving a single demerit. Grant finished as a private, with many demerits, but he did set the academy record for the high-jump on horseback.
