Harpers Ferry, Virginia
James Gardner, Harpers Ferry, Virginia, c. 1865

John Brown selected Harpers Ferry as the site for his attempted slave uprising because of its convenient location and because the only federal arsenal in the South was there. Perched on the bank of the Potomac River, just within the northern border of Virginia, the town was vulnerable to a surprise raid. Its arsenal could supply weapons to the slaves whom Brown thought would escape to join his force. None did.
