General Lee-The Convention
"General Lee—The Convention," Richmond Dispatch, 23 March 1867

Some of Lee's letters addressing the theme of reconciliation made their way into newspapers and in that way carried his message far and wide. This article was reprinted in The New York Times. Congress had ordered the drafting of new constitutions in the former Confederate states. Some southerners threatened to reject this process. Lee advised compliance and harmony.
