The Councils
John Marshall Council and James Madison Council
We have recognized two levels of particularly generous annual giving by naming them after great Virginians who were
important to the Virginia Historical Society's history. The John Marshall Council honors Chief Justice John Marshall, the society's first president, and the James Madison Council honors President James Madison, who was elected an honorary member at the society's first meeting.
The members of these two councils are full partners with the VHS in the preservation, interpretation, and stewardship of Virginia's history. Educational opportunities are offered to the Marshall and Madison Councils throughout the year, including domestic and foreign travel, private tours, and an annual special event honoring these esteemed members.
Battle Abbey Council
Contributions from the Battle Abbey Council enable the VHS to advance its mission: by funding education programs,
historical research, preservation, conservation, and exhibitions. The Council's support is increasingly important
in sustaining all programs and services for the public.
Members of the Battle Abbey Council also enjoy educational opportunities throughout the year, including
domestic and foreign travel.
Members of Battle Abbey Council, James Madison, and John Marshall Councils also enjoy special facility rental benefits. More information on rental facilities
