VIRGINIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY RECEIVES $35,000 FROM THE CAMERON FOUNDATION FOR INNOVATIVE HISTORY PROGRAM IN PETERSBURG SCHOOLS

Richmond, VA–The Virginia Historical Society has been awarded a $35,000 grant from The Cameron Foundation to support a strategic, three-year plan that will facilitate instruction in the Petersburg Public Schools in the areas of history and the social sciences. The Historical Society worked closely with the school system to design the program, which includes teacher workshops, classroom activities, teacher memberships, and instructional resource materials designed to advance the learning experience for 4th and 5th grade students. The resources will help teachers and students address Virginia's Standards of Learning requirements. "This program is intended to serve as a model that we hope will be expanded to benefit other grade levels in the future," commented Lloyd Hamlin, Superintendent of Petersburg Public Schools. The Cameron Foundation grant enables the VHS to support teachers in their efforts to make Petersburg and Virginia history relevant to the lives of students in the Petersburg school system. These resources will challenge students to think critically about history and the social sciences and how the lessons of the past are important in both understanding the present and shaping the future. "We are pleased that The Cameron Foundation awarded the Virginia Historical Society this opportunity to work with Petersburg teachers to promote a meaningful experience for students as they learn about history and the social sciences," remarked Charles Bryan, President and CEO of the Virginia Historical Society.

The Virginia Historical Society is located at 428 N. Boulevard. The Story of Virginia, An American Experience, a 10,000-square-foot exhibition with more than a thousand objects covering all of Virginia history from prehistoric times to the present is featured in the Robins Center for Virginia History.
