VHS President Receives Commending Resolution from General Assembly

Charles Bryan Returns to Cheering Staff and Surprise Banner

Richmond, VA – Charles F. Bryan, Jr., President and CEO of the Virginia Historical Society (VHS), was presented with a commending resolution by the Virginia General Assembly on Wednesday, February 20, 2008. HJR No. 198 recognizes Dr. Bryan for his outstanding service to the Virginia Historical Society and the citizens of the Commonwealth, and for his many contributions to the preservation of Virginia's rich and diverse history.

Upon his return to the VHS, Dr. Bryan was amazed to find trustees, staff, friends, and family cheering on the portico steps below a surprise banner. The banner, placed at the front of the building while Bryan was at the Capitol, features his photograph and reads "Charlie Bryan Welcomes You!"

"This day will rank as one of the best days of my life," Bryan said. "The honor I received from the General Assembly was humbling and is one that I accepted on behalf of my wonderful colleagues and good friends. But, as special as the ceremony at the state capitol was, it did not move me as much as driving up in front of Battle Abbey and having staff greet me on the front steps."

Bryan, who is retiring in December after twenty years as President and Chief Executive Director of the VHS, attended a reception following the banner reveal. Bryan told staff he is one very fortunate man before cutting a large cake that read "We commend you, Charlie."
