Virginia Historical Society Offers New Military Membership Rates

Richmond, VA – For the first time since its membership program started, the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) is offering a discounted membership rate to military personnel and their families. Active duty military service members may purchase an individual membership for $32 or a military family membership package for $55.

"Offering military rates is a way that we can say thank you to armed forces personnel and their families," said Kelly Winters, Membership Services Director at the VHS. "We hope that our current members in the military take advantage of the new discount and tell other families who can benefit."

The new membership level, which took effect January 2, 2008, saves individuals $13 and families $7 off the regular VHS membership price. The Society also offers discounted membership rates to seniors, teachers, and students. VHS members include more than 8,000 people from almost all fifty states and several foreign countries.

Membership includes subscriptions to two VHS publications, special invitations to members only events featuring nationally renowned speakers and historians, discounts in the Museum Shop, bus trip opportunities, and free admission to exhibitions, the research library, and daytime lectures. Also, VHS members receive free admission to Virginia House, a historic house museum with eight acres of grand gardens located near the Society.

Members help support the educational mission of the VHS, one that reaches the entire commonwealth and beyond. Every year, the Society conducts dozens of workshops throughout Virginia for teachers to improve history standards in the schools. Staff members also travel around the state taking programs directly into the classroom. Exhibitions and other related programs attract large numbers of school groups to the VHS headquarters in Richmond. In addition, the VHS offers a large number of fellowships to help promote ongoing research in all aspects of Virginia history. By joining the VHS, members are helping people of all ages gain a better understanding of Virginia's long and rich history.

For more information about the new military membership levels, contact the membership office at (804) 342-9658 or kwinters@vahistorical.org. Memberships may be purchased online at www.vahistorical.org.
