Special Events for Members
The Virginia Historical Society offers a wide variety of lectures and programs, many of which are for members only and feature renowned historians and authors. The following special events are open only to members. Invitations with dates and times are mailed to members before each event.

Noted sports writer Frank Deford was the J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., lecturer for 2009. The title of his presentation was "The Athlete as Gentleman: From Christy Mathewson to Arthur Ashe." |

Stuart G. Christian, Jr., Lecture
The Stuart G. Christian, Jr., Lecture was named in honor of the former president of the VHS (1989–91). This year's lecture was held May 21. Daniel P. Jordan, former president of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, reflected on the meaning of Thomas Jefferson within the broader context of his times and his enduring legacy for us today. Annual Garden Party
Held in April, the annual VHS Garden Party takes place at Virginia House. Members and their guests enjoy the spring flowers, delicious refreshments, and lively conversation in the gardens. |

Alexander W. Weddell Trustees Lecture
The first annual Alexander W. Weddell Lecture took place in 1983 and was named in honor of Amb. Alexander Weddell, former president of the VHS. Past speakers include John Shelton Reed, Walter Edgar, James I. Robertson, Jr., Jeremy Black, and Rick Atkinson. Last year's lecture took place November 19, 2008, and featured former VHS President and CEO Charles F. Bryan, Jr. Listen to the lecture online |
