Introduction

This web site highlights memorable events associated with the state legislature. Topics include, for example, the Statute for Religious Freedom, divorce, dueling, the first women delegates, and Sunday-closing laws.

Each of these vignettes was read on the appropriate day to the members of the 2004 session of the House of Delegates, which met between January and March.

These legislative minutes have been produced by the Virginia Historical Society—collecting and preserving the story of Virginia since 1831.
