On this day the General Assembly passed an act transferring all the property belonging to the College of William and Mary to the state. [Full article]

Churchill and Eisenhower Address the General Assembly

On this day Winston Churchill and General Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed a joint session of the General Assembly. The General Assembly had invited Churchill to speak, and an estimated 30,000 people stood in the rain to greet the former British prime minister and General Eisenhower when they arrived in Richmond. On this day House Bill 487, a piece of legislation that called for the creation of a State Commission of Conservation and Development, was reported and referred to committee in the Senate. Andrew Lewis Memorial Highway

On this day the General Assembly designated that portion of Interstate Route 81 within the boundaries of Rockbridge, Botetourt, and Roanoke counties, and the city of Salem as the "Andrew Lewis Memorial Highway." [Full article]
