In 1859 this look down the James River toward the old plantations of the Tidewater was a look back in time. In the distance we see the world that a century before was in the process of being transformed to match the idyllic aspirations of Virginia's colonial aristocracy, who had imagined that the European pastoral ideal was every bit as attainable along the James as along the Thames.
