How to submit an article
The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography invites the submission of scholarly articles on Virginia history. The editors require that essays be submitted in electronic form, preferably as an email attachment. If that is not possible, a computer file submitted on CD or DVD is acceptable. We can read PC files in MS Word but cannot read Mac files. Please use endnotes, not footnotes.
Because of limitations of space, the Virginia Magazine will not consider manuscripts shorter than fifteen pages or longer than twenty-five pages of double-spaced text, not including endnotes. (Please note that the Virginia Magazine does not publish fiction, poetry, genealogy, family history, or work that has appeared or will elsewhere in substantially the same form.)
After initial review by the editorial staff, manuscripts that merit further consideration will be sent to outside readers for anonymous critique. This process often takes as long as three or four months.
Manuscripts should be submitted to Graham T. Dozier, Managing Editor, Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, via email attachment (gdozier@vahistorical.org) or on CD or DVD mailed to P.O. Box 7311, Richmond, VA 23221-0311.
