Clemenceau Givings

Clemenceau Givings

Accession number: 1992.251.1

Clemenceau Givings, a native of Richmond and a graduate of Virginia Union University, was a member of the famed African American fighter group, the Tuskegee Airmen. He graduated flight training on May 28, 1943, and was soon sent to Italy to join the 100th Fighter Squadron. On March 18, 1944, Givings had engine trouble returning from a mission over Italy, and was forced to eject over the Adriatic Sea. Clemenceau Givings became tangled with his parachute and drowned at sea. An Italian fisherman recovered his body and he is now buried in Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial.
