In the Classroom: Stratigraphy

The surface of the earth is constantly changing. Due to erosion, (the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, and waves), and by deposition (the process of moving soil from one place to another), objects left behind by earlier people were buried under soil. As the process continues, the layering of soil deposits occur and a stratified site is created.

Cross section shows objects embedded in layers of soil.
