Critical Thinking: Questions for discussion

• Why are the paintings of John White considered a primary source? In comparison, point out the use of the camera today in recording history. When was the camera invented? How did it change history? Can John White's sketches be considered the "camera" of the 16th century? [View John White images online at Virtual Jamestown]

• Discuss the meaning of legend and myth. Because many documents have not survived throughout the years, historians are often left without positive proof of historical events. Scholars are continuously striving to weave together a more accurate record of American history. Because all history is not documented, often a myth or legend will evolve around an event. What legends have been created in American history? Discuss the Disney movie of Pocahontas. What is accurate? Inaccurate? [Lesson plan]

• This unit be used as an introduction to multicultural studies. Understanding the diversity of our society and the cultural backgrounds of the peoples of the United States is of great importance in creating respect for all citizens. The contacts between the English and the Powhatan Indians in the 17th century offer the opportunity to study two different cultures. What problems were created by their failure to understand each other? Can you see similar problems in today's society?

• Advanced students may use this material to analyze the important decisions made by the Indians and the English. What choices were available? What choices led to conflict? How could these conflicts have been resolved? For example: What would have happened if the English had not looked on the Native Americans as "pagans"? How would it be possible for these two groups to coexist and resolve the issue of land ownership?
