How Can I Best Serve My Country?

Cartoon

"How Can I Best Serve My Country?" appeared in the Planet, Richmond's African-American newspaper. More than one million African Americans served in the armed forces during World War II, but army units were segregated, and on naval vessels African-Americans often were restricted to menial tasks. Blacks hoped for the Double V—victory over America's enemies abroad and over America's own racism.
