Royalist's silver cup

Royalist's silver cup

Accession number: 1963.25

This Royalists's silver cup descended in the Temple family of King William County. It was made during the reign of Charles II, c.1680-85, and commemorates the king's having successfully hidden in an oak tree from Cromwell's men during the English Civil war. Note the crown high up in the tree. The Latin inscription translates, "Honored is the tree whose shade shelters us."
