Coming into the Lines

Slaves often took advantage of the presence of Federal troops nearby to escape bondage. In "Coming into the Lines," Edwin Forbes (1839-1895), special artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, showed a family of Virginia slaves crossing into Union lines and freedom.
