Coming into the Lines

Slaves often took advantage of the presence of Union troops nearby to escape bondage. In "Coming into the Lines," Edwin Forbes (1839–1895), special artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, showed a family of Virginia slaves crossing into Union lines and freedom.
