The painting entitled The Battle Between the Monitor and the Merrimac by Xanthus Smith (1839–1929) was completed about 1880. It depicts the famous sea battle between the USS Moniter and the USS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimac) at Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862.
