School wagon

School wagon

Accession number: 2000.186.160

This early twentienth-century photograph shows a group of children commuting to school in a horse-drawn vehicle. In rural areas with scant funds for public schools, students often had to travel long distances along unpaved roads that could turn from choking dust to boggy mud with a single heavy rain.
