University of Virginia

University of Virginia

The University of Virginia was the prototype for state-supported, secular higher education in the United States. Known as "Mr. Jefferson's University," it was not only founded by him, but its distinguishing architectural feature, "the academical village," was designed by the Sage of Monticello. This lithograph shows the university as it appeared in 1856.
